EFFECT OF VARIOUS PREHARVEST TREATMENTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNAL BROWNING DISORDERS IN 'BRAEBURN' APPLES

Abstract:
'Braeburn' apples grown in Southern Germany are susceptible to the development of different types of internal browning disorders during CA storage in some years. Preliminary experiments indicate that tree factors as well as storage factors are interrelated in the development of disorders in 'Braeburn' apples. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of various preharvest conditions such as tree age, nitrogen and calcium application and harvest date on flesh browning in 'Braeburn' apples. After various durations of CA storage and during subsequent ripening at 20°C, incidence of disorders, quality of fruits and changes of some physiological parameters were investigated. The significance of the various preharvest factors will be discussed.
