CUTTING PROPAGATION OF DIOSPYROS RHOMBIFOLIA

Author:   T. Tetsumura
Keywords:   Diospyros rhombifolia, dwarfing rootstock, hardwood cutting, IBA, Japanese persimmon, juvenility, softwood cutting, stooling, sucker
Abstract:
The possibility of propagating Diospyros rhombifolia Hemsl. by softwood and hardwood cuttings, which was recently proved to be useful as a dwarfing rootstock for 'Fuyu' Japanese persimmon (D. kaki L.), was investigated. Cuttings were collected from the suckers that differentiated spontaneously and sprouted vigorously from the roots after scion wood removal. All the softwood cuttings soaked in 25 ppm IBA for 24 hr late in June rooted 150 days after planting. The softwood cuttings planted late in July rooted slowly. The softwood cuttings treated with a quick dip in 3000 ppm IBA had the same rooting percentage as the control cuttings. After transplantation to an outdoor nursery, the softwood cuttings grew poorly. When the chaff was mounded at the base of the suckers in early summer in a similar way as stooling and the basally blanched suckers were collected in winter as the hardwood cuttings, they rooted better than the basal shoots and the middle shoots. The rooting percentage of the hardwood cuttings planted late in January was higher than that late in February and March. After rooting, the hardwood cuttings planted late in January and February grew better than those planted late in March.
