Abstract:
Keeping in view the rich genetic diversity in plum under subtropical conditions of Punjab, a systematic research programme on plum improvement, for the last 10 years, resulted in selection of a promising genotype - Alu Bokhara Amritsari. The present studies aimed at conserving the germplasm and standardisation of its propagation through stem cuttings and grafting, were conducted in the fruit nursery of Khalsa College, Amritsar during 1995–96. The experiment on stem cuttings consisted of two timings of taking cuttings (15 December and 15 January), two shoot portions (basal, sub-apical) and five levels of IBA (0, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 ppm). The data on sprouting and survival percentage, rooting propensity and shoot growth was recorded for six months. The higher rate of sprouting and survival was achieved in the cuttings collected on 15th December. Amongst the shoot portion, basal cuttings registered better performance in respect of rooting and shoot growth. IBA treatments at higher levels of 3000 and 4000 ppm trigerred the rooting propensity.

In the rootstock trial, four rootstocks viz. Sharbati peach (P. persica), Kabul Green Gauge, Kala Amritsari plum (P. salicina), and wild apricot (P. armeniaca) were tried to assess their suitability for the new genotype. The data recorded for six months on the nursery performance showed that the grafts worked on Kala Amritsari plum were superior in respect of sprouting 96.7, Survival (88.3 %) and plant vigour. Kabul Green Gauge was next in order. The grafts worked on wild apricot gave poor sprouting and failed to survive in the hot summer months.
