EFFECTS OF MATRICONDITIONING WITH MICRO CEL-E OF CALLISTEPHUS CHINENSIS L. SEEDS ON GERMINATION, SEEDLING EMERGENCE, STRESS TOLERANCE AND SOME METABOLIC EVENTS

Authors:   M. Grzesik, A. Dawidowicz-Grzegorzewska, K. Górnik
Abstract:
Effects of matriconditioning with Micro-Cel E of Callistephus chinensis L. ‘Lazuryt’ seeds on electrolyte leakage, total dehydrogenase and in vivo ACC oxidase activities, ethylene release, germination performance, seedling survival and catabolism of seed storage materials were studied at different temperatures and limited water supply conditions.

It was stated that optimal conditions of matriconditioning were 15°C during 5 days period, when the ratio (by weight) of seeds : carrier : water was 1:0.4:0.8–1.0. Matriconditioning increased cumulative germination percentage, seedling emergence, frost resistance and decreased mean germination time at 5°– 30°C range of temperatures and the harmful effect of limited water supply on seedling performance comparing with non-conditioned seeds. It was also shown that electrolyte leakage was decreased, whereas total dehydrogenase and in vivo ACC oxidase activities as well as a release of endogenous ethylene were increased comparing to the untreated seeds. Cytological observations indicate that during matriconditioning catabolic changes related to degradation of storage materials were taking place.
