Seedlings of papaya cv. ranchi were sprayed twice at 45 and 75 days after transplanting with TIBA (25 and 50 ppm), GA3 (25 and 50 ppm), ethrel (200 and 500 ppm), MH (200 and 500 ppm) and NAA (50 and 100 ppm). Treatment with GA3 at 25 ppm caused earliest flowering (79.5 days) compared with 104.5 days in control.
Spraying the plants with NAA at 100 ppm showed the highest percentage of female plants (62.5%) followed by ethrel at 500 ppm (60.0%) compared with 46.0 percent in control, the maximum yield of 45.6 kg per plant and 114.1 tonnes per hectare (plant density 2500 per ha) were recorded by treatment with GA3 at 25 ppm compared with 28.2 kg per plant and 70.6 tonnes per hectare in control.
GA3 also effective in increasing fruit size and pulp/peel ratio of fruit. treatment with GA3 at 50 ppm caused maximum total soluble solids (10.0), ascorbic acid (72mg/100g pulp), TSS/acid ratio (98.04) and sugar/acid ratio (69.7) and minimum titratable acid content (0.10%) of fruit.
Fruit from the plants treated with ethrel at 200 ppm caused maximum carotene content (4466 μg/100g pulp) while the papain yield (4.6g/plant) was found maximum by treatment with GA3 at 50 ppm.
