Abstract:
An inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) multilocus marker system was used to compare 28 accessions of Cucurbita pepo. A total of 90 polymorphic bands were scored and the results were subjected to cluster analysis.
Two main clusters were observed, one corresponding with C. pepo ssp. ovifera, loosely containing also C. pepo ssp. fraterna, and the other C. pepo ssp. pepo. Sub-clustering differentiated C. pepo ssp. fraterna and wild C. pepo ssp. ovifera from nearly all cultivated C. p. ssp. ovifera, and sub-sub-clustering grouped the cultigens more-or-less according to fruit shape.
In C. pepo ssp. pepo, sub-clustering differentiated the Cocozelle Group from the Zucchini Group.
Preliminary results using simple sequence repeats (SSR) suggest that this marker system may also be useful for better understanding infraspecific relationships within C. pepo.
