Abstract:
Four Cucumis species (C. sativus, C. melo, C. metuliferus, C. zeyheri) were used in embryo-culture experiments.
Embryos were excised from unripe fruits, one, two and three weeks after self-pollination.
There were improved in vitro culture conditions.
The most suitable conditions for the culture of Cucumis spp. embryos was with a medium with lower concentration of sucrose and growth regulators, and in the light.
Plants were regenerated from immature embryos isolated two weeks after self-pollination for C. sativus and C. melo and three weeks after self-pollination for the other species.
In general, embryo cultures of C. sativus and C. melo were more successful than the wild Cucumis spp.
Plants of C. sativus were also obtained from immature seeds isolated one week after self-pollination.
