Abstract:
The first Polish gynoecious pickling cucumber hybrid ‘Polan’, with high yield and resistance to scab and CMV, was developed at the Research Institute of Vegetable Crops and released in 1972. Three more hybrids, ‘Aladyn’, ‘Cezar’ and ‘Parys’, with multiple resistance to scab, CMV, powdery mildew, anthracnose, angular leaf spot and especially downy mildew, were released in 1992. Since 1985, downy mildew has been the most serious cucumber disease in Poland and other European countries.
Therefore, new F1 hybrids ‘Atlas’, ‘Cyryl’, ‘Bazyl’, ‘Hermes’ and ‘Izyd’ were developed and released in 1996–1999. They are very prolific and have high level of downy mildew resistance. ‘Hermes’ is the earliest hybrid.
