Abstract:
Several efforts are made to develop greenhouses adapted to desert conditions.
The systems investigated so far are conditioned by fan & pad cooling or are using solar stills.
Another approach is aiming at minimized sweet water consumption.
It consists of a closed greenhouse of enlarged roof surface, cooled by evaporation of salt water.
All the evapo-transpiration water is condensed and recycled to the plants.
Measurements in an experimental greenhouse conducted in the Northern Chilean Desert showed promising results.
The problems of heat transfer, pure artificial CO2 supply and other specialities of hermetically closed greenhouses are discussed.
