Abstract:
It has been shown that ethylene in rather low concentrations (0.1 ppm and higher) can affect the metabolic and morphogenetic processes in bulbous crops considerably.
A survey has been given of the aberrations in tulips, namely gummosis, bud-necrosis, flower-bud blasting, inhibition of root development, 'stokkeplanten', leaf abnormalities, root hair development, wax deposition on the leaves, inhibition of the elongation growth of the stems and flower-bud abscission in lilies.
The responsiveness of the plants to ethylene seemed to be largely dependent on the temperature, the developmental stage of the plants and varietal characters.
