ISHS Acta Horticulturae 51: Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Flowers and Vegetables

CARNATION PRODUCTION TIMED FOR FLOWERS IN NOVEMBER-DECEMBER

Author:   G. Kokas
Abstract:
In Hungary large areas of glasshouses and plastic tunnels used for propagation or vegetable growing are from end of June till December empty or occupied by additional crops which yield little or no profit. Trials carried out at the Óbuda Nurseries have shown that densely planted carnations terminated for single crop in November, December is by far the most profitable culture.

Main datas of the recommended method are:

  • planting on 25 June in peat and perlite,
  • pinching on 10 July,
  • light treatment all night between 12–29 August,
  • removing secondary buds and sideshoots between 20–30 September.

Flowers harvested from the end of October (15 blooms per m2), November (94 blooms) till 20 December (58 blooms) yield a total of 167 blooms. After deducting the costs of six months growing, a clear profit of 347 Hungarian Forinths per m2 netto remains.

There are indications that short-time production (single crop) might partly substitute year round flowering of carnations, provided further research will be carried out, mostly on variety selection.
