Abstract:
From 1962–1963 CO2 enrichment became a common practice in growing lettuce, tomatoes and autumn cucumbers in the Netherlands.
Not until 1973 CO2 enrichment at spring cucumbers started.
In 1970–1973 renewed research on CO2 enrichment at spring cucumbers gave clear increases in fruit yields (22, 16, 44 and 27 % respectively) at raised CO2 concentrations (1400 ppm). On commercial holdings severe leaf injury may be suffered in February/March at CO2 enrichment.
It appeared raised CO2 concentrations and raised temperatures are important factors causing injury.
By opening ventilators timely at a small width injury can be prevented.
It is estimated 90 % of spring cucumbers are enriched now.
