Abstract:
A completely satisfactory technique for the production of commercial crops of glasshouse tomatoes in peat substrate has been developed in Guernsey.
This major change from traditional soil growing methods to peat culture has been rapid and is due to :
- The high annual cost of soil sterilization, essential with a monoculture.
- Easily made peat substrates used in conjunction with low plant densities can reduce costs of production.
- Early and total yields of tomatoes grown in peat are equal to those obtained in good soil.
A standard technique has been established for the preparation of the glasshouse, for mixing the peat substrate, raising the plants and growing the crop through to maturity.
A programme for watering and fertilizing the growing crop is described.
