FIELD RESISTANCE IN MANGO VARIETIES AGAINST SHOOT GALL |

| Abstract:
Shoot gall caused by Apsylla cistellata Buckton is one the most severe mango malady in Nepal, Bangladesh, Northern India, and Pakistan. The only effective control measure against this insect is the use insecticidal application before gall formation in the rainy months of August-September. Therefore, attempts were made for two years (1994–95 and 1995–96) to screen out 113 varieties of mango against shoot gall formation, percent twig affected and ovipositional preference by female A. cistellata. Twenty varieties viz : Annanas, Awain, Baramalda, Chinnaswaranrekaha, Delicious, Gulabkhas, K.O.7, K.O.-11, Makaram, Maharaja of Mysore, Mohamddi, Mundappa, Nowneetum, N x Panchadharakalsa, Panchadhara Kalsa, Police, Sonakullu, Salem Banglora and Vellakachi had zero gall formation in both the years. Thus escaped attack and egg laying. These varieties seem to have field resistance against A. cistellata. Other 68 varieties observed were found susceptible (less than 100 galls/10 twigs). While 22 were highly susceptible (more than 100 galls/10 twigs). | |
