REJUVENATION OF OLD AND OVERCROWDED ALPHONSO MANGO ORCHARD WITH PRUNING AND USE OF PACLOBUTRAZOL |

| Abstract:
A field trial aimed at restoring yields of declining mango orchards was conducted for three successive years (1993–95) on 34 years old severely pruned Alphonso mango trees. Effect of paclobutrazol (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 gm/tree) applied in July 92 and 93 through soil and their residual effect in 1994-95, was studied in randomized block design. Pooled results of first two years indicated that flowering on treated trees at all the four concentrations was significantly and linearly advanced (12.6, 20.3, 27.0 & 28.3 days, respectively over control) and profused (64.99, 76.62, 84.64 and 85.71% respectively) as compared to untreated controls (8.5%). Similarly treated trees recorded significantly higher yields of 69.177, 85.800, 94.076 and 96.65 kg fruits/tree as against low yields of 8.108 kg fruits/tree on untreated trees. However, in the absence of paclobutrazol in the following year (1995), soil residual effect of 7.5 g and 10 g was profound as they recorded significantly early and profused flowering and higher yields of 45.40 kg and 64.47 kg/tree over the control (25.62 kg). The recommendation based on this result is being commercially adopted in the region by mango growers. | |
