ISHS Acta Horticulturae 509: VI International Symposium on Mango

EFFECT OF AMMONIUM NITRATE SPRAYS ON FLOWERING AND HARVEST TIME OF ‘MANILA’, ‘ATAULFO’, AND ‘TOMMY ATKINS’ MANGO IN NAYARIT, MEXICO

Abstract:
The efficacy of 2% or 4% ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) sprays as early flowering promoters in ‘Manila’, ‘Ataulfo’, and ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango was evaluated in Nayarit, Mexico, to determine their potential to obtain early harvest. Three biweekly sprays of NH4NO3 2% or 4% beginning in November caused full bloom (anthesis) of ‘Manila’ mango to occur 37 and 34 days ahead of control, respectively. This resulted in harvest of ‘Manila’ 44 days ahead of the untreated trees. For ‘Ataulfo’, three biweekly sprays of NH4NO3 2% starting in November also promoted earlier bloom, with harvest occurring 22 days earlier than in the control trees. Foliar sprays of NH4NO3 2% or 4% were ineffective in promoting early bloom of ‘Tommy Atkins’ trees in this study.
