ISHS Acta Horticulturae 509: VI International Symposium on Mango

STARCH RESERVES IN THE MANGO TREE

Authors:   S.J. Davie, P.J.C. Stassen, H.G. Grove
Keywords:   mango, carbohydrate, fruit load, fruit thinning, photosynthesis, tree pruning
Abstract:
Many of the problems associated with mango fruit production have been ascribed to insufficient carbohydrate reserves in the tree structures or to the inability of the tree to supply sufficient carbohydrate from current photosynthate production in order to meet the demand of a heavy fruit load.

The accumulation and utilization of starch in the mango tree is discussed for trees of varying ages and the effect of fruit load, fruit thinning and tree pruning on starch reserves is demonstrated.
