Abstract:
The effects of pruning at panicle emergence on floral induction in axillary buds were studied in seven-year-old mango trees cv.
Irwin grown in plastic house at Wakayama which is regarded as a warm climate area in Japan.
On March 7 and April 7, shoots on which the terminal panicle had emerged were treated by removing panicle and pruning at 6 - 7 cm (1/3) and 12 - 13 cm (2/3) portion below the base of the panicle.
Two types of shoots consisted of two and three times of vegetative flush were used.
Most treatments induced the flower initiation in the axillary buds at every portion, even at the proximal portion of the pruned shoots.
More number of panicles were formed with prunings in March than in April.
The intensity of floral initiation was greater on three flushed shoots.
Axillary panicles emerged and flowered at about the same time irrespective of pruning time and degree of pruning.
The ratio of flower type was little different among all panicles.
These results indicate that axillary panicles is produced with pruning well developed shoots during cool season in mango cv.
