Abstract:
A field trial was conducted during 1997 season simultaneously at two different locations with an objective to estimate the heat units required for the maturation of three commercial mango varieties viz., Alphonso, Kesar and Ratna grown under most common soil conditions at Vengurla location and on typical lateritic rocky slopes of Deogad. Results indicated that all the three varieties differs significantly for their period of maturation at both locations. However, total heat units recorded by each varieties at both locations were more or less equal. Amongst the three varieties studied, cv. Alphonso recorded minimum duration (111 and 93 days) and heat units (718 and 701 degree days) at both locations followed by Kesar (118 and 98 days; 773 and 799 degree days) and Ratna (127 and 112 days; 849 and 866 degree days) at respective places. This could be attributed to the exposure of fruits of all the three varieties to comparatively more average degree days temperature of 1.24 per day at Deogad location than Vengurla.
