Abstract:
Actively growing rhizomes of Alstroemeria sterile hybrids and sterile mutants were irradiated with gamma rays and fast neutrons to induce new cvs.
The gamma rays doses ranged from 2.5 to 100 Gy and fast neutrons from 3 to 6 Gy.
Useful mutations were produced by gamma rays doses ranging from 3 to 6 Gy.
Dose 10 Gy caused very strong retardation of plant development and mortality of plants amounting about 40%, and dose 25 Gy caused 70–90% mortality.
Dose 50 Gy of gamma rays was lethal for Alstroemeria plants.
From many mutants several proved to be interesting for trade and have been registered as news cvs: Catalina, Ines, Juanita, Carlota, Isabel, Paula, Matilde, Azucena, Erendira.
