ISHS Acta Horticulturae 508: XIX International Symposium on Improvement of Ornamental Plants

TRANSFORMATION OF EUPHORBIA PULCHERRIMA

Authors:   A.K. Hvoslef-Eide, K. Bakke, H. Gjerde, N.I. Vik
Abstract:
Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is by far the most important pot plant in Norway with 5.2 million plants produced each year (for 4.5 million inhabitants!). In the sixties, ‘Annette Hegg’ and similar varieties revolutionised Poinsettia production and consumption in Europe and USA.

Today we are exploring new methods for gene transfer into Poinsettia through three methods; by Agrobacterium transformation on excised meristems, through the use of gene gun on excised meristems, and by using electric currents to pull DNA directly into the meristem through electrophoresis. We have so far obtained transient expression by all three methods through GUS staining. By July, we hope to have proven stable transformation as well.
