Abstract:
Osteospermum (Compositae) is an attractive spring-summer ground cover plant. Most of the Osteospermum cultivars are interspecific hybrids. A considerable contribution to the improvement of the genus has been given in Europe by Danish and German breeders, using conventional methods. The rapid evolution of molecular approaches offers to breeders new sources of variation. Tissue culture techniques and transformation protocols suitable for genetically engineering Osteospermum species are available. We report two examples in which Osteospermum was transformed with rol genes and N gene of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV); transgenic plants showed modifyed phenotypic traits and virus resistance respectively.
