ISHS Acta Horticulturae 506: International Workshop on Ecological Aspects of Vegetable Fertilization in Integrated Crop Production

SPRING CABBAGE YIELD AND QUALITY AS RELATED TO NITROGEN FERTILIZER TYPE AND METHOD OF FERTILIZER APPLICATION.

Authors:   W. Sady, S. Rozek, M. Leja, A. Mareczek
Keywords:   Soluble sugars, ascorbic acid, phenols
Abstract:
The results of a two-year experiment to examine the effects of different forms of nitrogen fertiliser on the yield and quality of spring cabbage grown in a plastic tunnel are presented. The changes in soluble sugars, ascorbic acid and total phenols in cabbage heads during short-term storage at 20°C and 5°C were also investigated. No significant effect of the form of nitrogen fertilizer on the yield, mean weight of heads and dry matter content were observed. However, placement of ammonium sulphate and urea caused a significant increase in soluble sugars compared to broadcast fertilization with potassium nitrate. The changes in chemical composition of the cabbage heads during short-term storage also depended on the form of nitrogen fertilizer used.
