ISHS Acta Horticulturae 505: VII International Symposium on Rubus and Ribes

CROSSABILITY OF EURASIAN RUBUS SPECIES WITH RED RASPBERRY AND BLACKBERRY

Authors:   C. Finn, K. Wennstrom, K. Hummer
Keywords:   germplasm, interspecific hybridization, Rubus species
Abstract:
To increase genetic variability in Rubus breeding material, crosses were attempted with 22 Rubus species representing Idaeobatus, Malachobatus, Rubus and Anoplobatus. Genotypes representing a species were crossed with cultivars representing erect, semi-erect and trailing blackberries and red raspberry that were at a similar ploidy level. Crosses were attempted over three years. The success of crossing varied from species to species and from year to year. Genotypes with intermediate characteristics between cultivated and species material that are fertile, have been obtained for R. sumatranus Miq., R. coreanus Miq., and R. parvifolius L. Vigorous seedlings of crosses with R. caucasicus Focke, R. caesius L., and R. georgicus Focke were obtained but they have not yet flowered. These seedlings, not surprisingly, look like their species parent when the species was used as a female and are likely a result of pseudogamy.
