| Abstract:
The British Columbia (BC) red raspberry breeding program has released a series of cultivars adapted to the fresh market. ‘Chilcotin’, released in 1978 was an important factor in the revival of the market in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). ‘Chilliwack’, released in 1987, produces firmer fruit with less susceptibility to rot and better flavour than ‘Chilcotin’, and has a similar non-darkening red colour. It has become a major cultivar in Chile, from where it is exported by trans-hemispheric shipping during December; it is also grown extensively in southeastern Australia. ‘Tulameen’, released in 1990, is now an important cultivar in the PNW and is being used in greenhouse production for out-of-season fruit in western Europe. Two cultivars have been named since 1994. ‘Qualicum’ produces firm fruit that is suited to long-distance shipping. ‘Malahat’ produces early season fruit. Other cultivars from the program have also had an impact on fresh market production. ‘Skeena’, released in 1978 and now of major importance in New Zealand, is generally used for processing, but the early fruit is used fresh. ‘Comox’, released in 1987 is grown in Tasmania, Australia. ‘Haida’, released in 1973 and ‘Algonquin’, released in 1991, are grown in Minnesota and Ontario, respectively. Potential cultivars (selections) that hold promise for fresh market production are described. | |
