THE MARKETING OF MEDICINAL, AROMATIC PLANTS AND ESSENTIAL OILS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Author:   C. Roersch
Keywords:   medicinal plants, aromatic plants, essential oils, markets, Dominican Republic
Abstract:
In the Dominican Republic, the use of medicinal plants is very common. In general they are treated in three ways: a) in the healing of illnesses: plants are used for a very wide range of illnesses and diseases in the traditional Dominican medical system; b) as a curiosity: sometimes it is forgotten that the medicinal plants are intimately related with the Dominican culture and are treated as if the were recently discovered; and c) as a health threat: medicinal plants are first of all considered as very toxic. Extensive systematic research to the use of medicinal plants hasn't been done yet. The marketing of the medicinal plants in the Dominican Republic is still an even lesser known aspect. This paper presents primarily data of the turnover of the medicinal plants in the most important markets places of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The import and the export of medicinal plants to and from the Dominican Republic were examined. This was also done for the aromatic plants and essential oils.
