Abstract:
The possible toxic side effects of a Pterodon emarginatus Vog extract on the hematologic and hemostatic systems were studied at Wistar rats and New Zealand rabbits, respectively. An oily extract of the plant was administered orally at the dose of 0,5 mL/kg for 30 days. For hemostatic evaluations were determined prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and platelet aggregation using ADP, PAF, collagen and arachidonic acid, as aggregating agents. A test with the standard antiaggregating agent, Trifusal, was also performed. Data were analysed statistically by the Mann-Whitney test for the hematologic study and by the Wilcoxon test for the hemostatic study. No changes that might indicate a possible side effect of the extract on hematologic or hemostatic parameters (PT and aPTT) were observed.
