THE FUNGICIDAL PROPERTIES OF EXTRACTS OF CLOVE (EUGENIA CARYOPHYLLUS SPRENG.) AND SWEET FLAG (ACORUS CALAMUS LINN.)

Authors:   C. Jatisatienr, A. Jatisatienr
Keywords:   clove, Eugenia caryophyllus, Sweet flag, Acorus calamus, fungicidal
Abstract:
The interactions between plant extracts (clove, sweet flag and control) and dermatophytes (Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum), plant extracts and incubation time (12, 24 and 36 hours), plant extracts and storage time (1, 3, 5 and 7 days) were investigated on the length of hyphae (μm) and % germination. Interactions between plant extracts and dermatophytes, and plant extracts and incubation times were significantly obvious. It was evident that the degree of inhibition for the hyphal length and % germination against these dermatophytes depended on the species of plant extracted. Moreover, the effect of incubation time on the hyphal length and % germination depended also on the species of plant extracted. However, the interaction between plant extracts and storage time was not revealed indicating that the extracts of clove and sweet flag could be used during a period of at least 7 days.
