Abstract:
The study was aimed at discovering new plant drugs of potential biological activity.
Leaves, fruit and bark of six native trees of the Paraná rain forest, in the province of Misiones (Argentina), were assayed for activity.
Proteolytic activity was detected in fresh leaf tissue of Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Tabernaemontana australis and Sebastiana brasiliensis, and also in fruits of Jacaratia dodecaphylla. Roupala cataractarum leaf tissue showed a very strong positive reaction for haemolytic saponins, the same as J. dodecaphylla. Abundance of alkaloids was determined in all the leaf tissue studied by the Dragendorf reagent, and by observation under UV light.
Alkaloids of Erithroxylon deciddum and Erithroxylon coca had not resemblance whatsoever.
