ESSENTIAL OILS FROM TWO BRAZILIAN VITEX SPECIES

Authors:   S.G. Leitão, E.N. Fonseca, T.C. dos Santos
Keywords:   Vitex, Verbenaceae, essential oil
Abstract:
The chemical composition of the essential oils from two Brazilian Vitex species (Vitex polygama and Vitex cymosa) is reported. Both essential oils showed a predominantly sesquiterpenoid composition. In that of V. polygama the most abundant monoterpenes were alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and limonene followed by the sesquiterpenes delta-cadinene and beta-caryophyllene. No diterpenes were found in this oil. In the essential oil of Vitex cymosa the most abundant sesquiterpene was an oxygenated derivative of copaene and two diterpenes were found: phytol and isophytol. No monoterpenes were found in this oil.
