ISHS Acta Horticulturae 50: Symposium on Peat in Horticulture

PEAT AND OTHER ORGANIC MATERIALS REPEATEDLY USED FOR GREENHOUSE GROWN VEGETABLES

Author:   T. Pudelski
Abstract:
Testing the effect of heating layer and peat substrate used for cucumber growing, for the second time, it was found, that:
  • Cucumber grown on a mixture of organic heating layer and peat substrate, for the second time after cucumber and tomatoes, may give lower yields due to growth inhibitors appearing in result of roots residues decomposition.
  • Steaming of such substrate /100°C for 30 min./ 6–8 weeks before planting induced an inactivation of phytotoxic substances and the disappearance of the negative effect.
  • There was no difference in the yield of tomatoes grown each year after cucumbers when planted on fresh or repeatedly used substrate, and no additional effects were noted due to substrates steaming.
