ISHS Acta Horticulturae 50: Symposium on Peat in Horticulture

FERTILIZING AND LIMING, - FACTORS INFLUENCING UPTAKE OF TRACE ELEMENTS BY ORNAMENTAL PLANTS GROWN IN PEAT SUBSTRATE

Author:   Z. Haber
Abstract:
Up to the date there is less scientific data on the influence of macro nutrient fertilization on trace elements uptake by ornamental plants grown in peat. Relatively, most of the information we have about liming, but calcium changing pH reaction affects uptake of trace elements indirectly.

In experiments (performed from 1967 to 1973), the substrate has been prepared from sphagnun - peat of North Poland origin. Keeping up growth conditions at constant level, only the ratio of N : P2O5 : K2O or liming levels were differentiated. In plants the content of B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn has been determined. The content of trace elements in relation to N, P, K, fertilizing was tested on Gerbera jamesoni, Cyclamen persicum, Sinningia hybrida and Hydrangea macrophylla, however influence of liming was proved on a wide range of ornamental plants species commonly cultivated in Poland in peat substrate.
