ADVANCES IN ACTINIDIA BIOTECHNOLOGY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Abstract:
In the past decade, Actinidia biotechnology and molecular biology have made great advances. Plant regeneration has been realized from almost all types of explants available, including protoplasts. Morphological, anatomical and cellular analysis, agronomic performance and biological behavior analysis of regenerated plants have been conducted. Interspecific hybrid cultivars and cybrid plants have been created through embryo rescue, and protoplast fusion, respectively. Cryopreservation of germplasm has achieved preliminary success. Actinidin gene, ACC synthase and oxidase genes, PG gene, XET gene, sucrose-phosphate synthase gene, and Ca-regulated gene, etc. have been cloned and/or sequenced. Transgenic plants have been recovered, and some foreign genes, including a synthetic gene (hEGF), have successfully expressed in transgenic plants. Molecular labeling techniques, such as RFLP, RAPD, AFLP and SSR have been introduced and applied to genetic mapping, cultivar typing, dieocy analysis, sex-screening, classification and phylogenetic analysis. According to this progress, possible advances in the next 5 years are predicted.
