| Abstract:
Kiwifruit breeding programs have produced some new selections or cultivars which have been identified, tested, and sometimes, introduced. The performance of one selection of Actinidia chinensis variety (K1–90) was tested in North-West Italy; the annual vegetative cycle, the fruit growth and the seasonal changes in the chemical composition of fruits were studied. The selection showed a shorter vegetative cycle, having earlier bud break and fruit maturation. The fruits were completely hairless, had similar weights and dimensions as ‘Hayward’ but they had a carbohydrate, acid and dry matter content higher than ‘Hayward’. The selection studied seems to be interesting for warm regions where the risk of spring frost is reduced. The earlier maturation makes earlier harvest possible, thereby avoiding the risk of early autumn frosts. The general quality of fruits when ripe, their dimensions and weights and the smooth skin make the selection examined an interesting alternative to ‘Hayward’. | |
