Abstract:
The effect of vibration on the incidence and severity of physical damage to Hayward kiwifruit in 3 different types of packaging was examined.
The packaging examined were Single Layer trays, 3 layer Tripacks and the loose filled Eurobulk packs.
Most of the damage caused by vibration was abrasion, with a lesser amount of compression and little impact damage.
The abrasion was worst where fruit were free to move in the pack, either in pocket packs or when loose filled.
Compression was worst in the loose filled bulk packs where the fruit could move and become compacted within the carton.
The results demonstrate the benefits of keeping fruit separate and immobilised in reducing physical damage during transportation.
