| Abstract:
Three Actinidia species, A. arguta, A. kolomikta and A. polygama, are naturally widespread in Korea and a fourth species, A. rufa, is restricted to Che Ju Island. Kiwifruit plantings have expanded rapidly in Korea and in 1997 1,471 ha produced 12,814 tons of fruit. Of the area cultivated, 5.2% is under shelter to prevent disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae. Most plantings contain ‘Hayward’ (and the associated male, ‘Tomuri’) but fruit of A. chinensis ‘Kuimi’ is also being produced commercially. Korea imports nearly 10,000 tons of fresh kiwifruit each year and exports about 100 tons as processed products and 400 tons as fresh fruit annually. Research in Korea on the development of new types of kiwifruit is summarized. | |
