THE CALIFORNIA CHERIMOYA INDUSTRY

Author:   D. Grossberger
Keywords:   varieties, irrigation, fertilisation, pruning, pollination, marketing
Abstract:
California has a relatively small cherimoya industry. It supplies all the United States' market and also exports. Approximately 120 hectares are cultivated, producing approximately 900 ton yearly. Fields are irrigated by drip and mini-sprinkler, fertilised with various chemical fertilisers. All fields are pollinated by hand and harvested between November and May. Distribution is primarily through supermarket chains and specialty fruit distributors. Demand is rising, as it becomes better known. The principal varieties are ‘White’, ‘Bays’ and ‘Booth’, which cover some 60 % of production. These and other areas will be reviewed and detailed.
