Abstract:
Since 1985 horticultural produce and commodities have been evincing increasing importance in developing countries, which have increased their overall share of world production and now have fruits and vegetables making up a large proportion of their exports.
Future growth will likely depend on rising and changes in demand in both developed and developing countries and on the capability of emerging economies to maintain or increase their competitive strength in world markets.
The implementation of the Uruguay Agreement will impact on trade volumes and trade flows particularly through such general areas as market access, tarification, limits on export subsidies, cuts in domestic supports, phytosanitary measures and safeguard clauses.
The brief of the present study is to gain a better understanding of the economic significance of, and outlook for, production, consumption, imports and exports of fruits and vegetables, and key issues related thereto, in developing countries.
