CHESTNUT TREES AND THE LANDSCAPE IN AOSTA VALLEY: INTERVENTIONS FOR RESTORING THE TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM

Keywords:   Castanea sativa Mill., canker blight, landscape, recovering
Abstract:
Chestnut grove in many areas where it used to be present is disappearing or is badly threatened by canker blight.

In order to avoid the risk of losing this precious resource the Aosta Valley Region Government, in collaboration with the Arboriculture Department of Turin University, a few years ago started several actions aiming at the reclaiming and the improvement of chestnut woods. Thanks to these initiatives, 120 secular chestnut trees have been recovered in 4 years.

The restoration and protection of these landscape units - besides the recovering of the aesthetical value - are instruments of environment protection useful for fighting against hydrogeological disorder, meaning also the valorization of the cultural identity of these areas by the restoring of traditional agricultural systems and landscape.
