Abstract:
Young chestnut trees are able to grow in a poor soil with no additional supply of minerals for at least three years.
During this period, the growth is rapidly and markedly enhanced by complete fertilization.
Moreover, mineral contents change: Ca and Mg concentrations increase in relation to their supply and Mn decreases whichever fertilization is applied.
At the cell-wall level, fertilization induces some modifications; pectins are less extractible and less acidic.
