ISHS Acta Horticulturae 494: II International Symposium on Chestnut

EFFECT OF THINNING CATKINS ON NUTRITION IN THE CHINESE CHESTNUT TREE

Authors:   K. Liu, Z. Zhao, C. Li
Keywords:   Chinese chestnut, catkins, nutrition consumption
Abstract:
The chestnut is a kind of monoeciously polygamous plant and the proportion of male to female is about 3400. Nearly 40% of the nutrition was consumed by male inflorescence. So thinning 90–95 percent of catkins manually could significantly increase the yield. The effects of thinning catkins on the consumption of nutrition constituents in Chinese chestnut such as water dry weight and amino acid etc. were studied quantitatively by using conventional chemical analysis methods aiming at providing a theoretical basis for yield increase of Chinese chestnut. Results showed that when thinned catkins fell 20 days ahead of their normal falling, about 53.83% of the total of moisture content was saved; the transpiration rates per catkins decreased by 52.79 ml, and the consumption of the dry weight, the total of amino acids, the starch, the water-soluble sugar and the total nitrogen content decreased by 75%, 64.35%, 62.15%, 68.66% and 53.83% respectively.
