ISHS Acta Horticulturae 494: II International Symposium on Chestnut

CHESTNUT ENVELOPES CONTAIN XYLAN- AND POLYGALACTURONIC ACID-RICH POLYSACCHARIDES

Authors:   V. Gloaguen, D. Nourani, H. Morvan
Keywords:   tan, pericarp, cell wall, pectin, hemicellulose
Abstract:
Direct trimethyl silylation analysis of both shell and tan powders of four chestnut varieties (Bouche de Betizac, Marigoule, Goujounac and Bournette) indicated that xylose and galacturonic acid were the main monosaccharides found in these materials. A sequential extraction procedure performed on the Marigoule variety, followed by chromatographic purifications, allowed us to prepare and purify pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides from the cell walls of the chestnut envelopes. Pectic polysaccharides were mainly composed of highly methyl-esterified polygalacturonic acid and hemicellulosic compounds were identified as xylans.
