Abstract:
With the aim to build a harvester which can work in mountainous areas, three different prototypes of chestnut harvesters have been built since 1995. The trial results show that a good throughput capacity has been reached (up to 160 kg h-1). Despite the good machinery yield, the amount of foreign material in the product harvested is up to 8% in dry soil conditions, and becomes higher with wet soil conditions.
Some improvement will be necessary in order to increase the quality of the harvested chestnuts.
From the economic point of view, the machine is less costly than suction machines, and the mechanical harvest with the prototype is cheaper than manual harvest for more than 2 ha y-1 harvested by the machine.
