Abstract:
The current development of Chinese chestnut is reviewed.
It has been shown that chestnut production has been restored and rapidly developing since the 1980's.
Based on a series of important problems facing the new aspect of chestnut development, viewpoints about the chestnut development in the 21st century in China are suggested: chestnut will not only be used as a kind of nut but also as a grain substitute.
It is important to establish the chestnut orchards ecologically, to conserve and further utilize germplasm resources, especially wild ones, to enhance the processing industry and to develop markets.
