Authors:   M. Botu, Gh. Achim, E. Turcu
Keywords:   chestnut selections
Abstract:
In the spontaneous and cultivated flora from the North - East of Oltenia, in a 500 km2 area, there are numerous plants forming different populations of chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill). The climatic conditions (average annual temperature is 10,2°C and the annual rainfall is 750 – 800 mm) and the existence of some secular chestnut trees with various origins, favourised the forming of some landrace populations, from which 25 with different agro - biological characteristics were selected.

The following selections were noticed because of their productivity, high vigor, quality and large fruits and relatively early fruit ripening period (October 1 – 20): VL 500 H, VL 503 H, VL 504 H, VL 520 D, VL 521 D, etc. These selections also have a good phytosanitary status.

The selections are under evaluation for their fruits and some of them as rootstocks.
