This article presents an overview of French chestnut growing, including yield figures for the country's main producing regions, import-export traffic, consumption and the production of processed chestnuts.
The surface area of traditional chestnut groves and recent stands are given, along with the main varieties.
The second section of the article describes current research and development programs from the point of view of the various problems encountered in chestnut growing: plant material, orchard management, sanitary protection, and improvement in nut quality and storage behavior.
