ISHS Acta Horticulturae 493: I ISHS Workshop on Water Relations of Grapevines

13C/12C DISCRIMINATION MEASURED IN TARTRATE AND SUGARS IN MATURE GRAPEVINE BERRIES

Abstract:
Carbon discrimination expressed as delta13C, is an indicator of water stress in the period of carbon assimilation. delta13C values of tartrate and sugar of berries collected from vineyards with very contrasting climates are compared. A significant relationship between delta13C values and water stress is reported. The grapevine water stress status before and after veraison can be evaluated by measuring delta13C values of tartrate and sugar in mature berries. The delta13C values depend also on the rootstock and the variety. The usefulness of this measure to characterize vineyard environmental characteristics is discussed.
