Abstract:
Carbon discrimination expressed as 13C, is an indicator of water stress in the period of carbon assimilation. 13C values of tartrate and sugar of berries collected from vineyards with very contrasting climates are compared.
A significant relationship between 13C values and water stress is reported.
The grapevine water stress status before and after veraison can be evaluated by measuring 13C values of tartrate and sugar in mature berries.
The 13C values depend also on the rootstock and the variety.
The usefulness of this measure to characterize vineyard environmental characteristics is discussed.
