ISHS Acta Horticulturae 493: I ISHS Workshop on Water Relations of Grapevines

ECOPHYSIOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF EARLY-RIPENING EXTRA-REGIONAL GRAPEVINE CULTIVARS IN TUSCANY

Abstract:
A two-year research project related to the use of three grape cultivars (Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Silvaner) in the southern Tuscan vine-growing area is reported. In the years 1996 and 1997, which differed considerably from the meteorological point of view, some production and ecophysiological parameters related to grape sugar content and to leaf gas exchange and water potential, were examined. The results of the two harvests were then correlated to each other to find relationships between the examined parameters. The results show the considerable importance of the effect of the year on transpiration and photosynthesis, especially under the conditions of limited water availability which occurred in 1997, while the leaf water potential showed generally high values, above all in the final vegetative stage of each season, without any significant differences between the vintages. The sugar content of the must at harvest and the leaf water potential showed a positive correlation in 1997 which is not found in the previous year, and the same positive correlation is seen between the sugar content and transpiration, while there is no relation between reduction in transpiration and the quantitative aspects of production.
