SCREENING SOME TURKISH MELON GENTYPES AT THE GERMINATION LEVEL FOR TOLERANCE TO SALINITY

Author:   I. AKINCI
Abstract:
Anatolia has a great genetic diversity in melon. In this study, tolerance to salinity of 83 melon genotypes, collected from different melon growing areas of Turkey, was investigated at the germination stage. Seeds of all genotypes were germinated in 75, 150, 200 and 250 mM NaCI concentrations and germination rates were compared with the control germination rates in distilled water. Results of the experiments showed that C14, B12, B14, B08, A16, B03 and B15 genotypes germinated in a short period and had higher germination rate than other genotypes in salt containing media. Trials for salinity tolerance are continued with these genotypes.
