DETERMINATION OF SHELF-LIFE OF SOME TOMATO CULTIVARS GROWN IN GREENHOUSES

Authors:   S. Karaçanci, R.Z. Eltez, Y. Tüzel

Abstract:
This investigation was conducted to determine the shelf-life of 7 tomato cultivars (Yaiza F1, 170 F1, Simge F1, 301 F1, Belgin F1, 225 F1 and Elif 190 F1). The harvested fruits were stored at 20°C for 9 days in polystyrene trays covered with stretch film.

The stored fruits were tested for weight loss, total soluble solids, dry matter content, vitamin C and pH value at three day intervals.

The effects of storage time between varieties were found to be significant. The average weight loss reached 2.8 % on the 9th day of storage. Among the varieties, the highest weight loss was obtained from cv. Simge F1 and the lowest from cv. Elif F1 and a similar decrease in fruit size was also noted on the 9th day.

Titratable acidity, total soluble solids and fruit firmness changed significantly according to variety and storage time. Total dry matter content was affected by variety, whereas, vitamin C depended on storage time. The change in pH of fruit juice samples was influenced slightly by storage time and variety.
